CAN WE REALLY CALL GOD, DADDY GOD?

Daddy God

ONE OF OUR FAVORITE REVELATIONS OF GOD, OUR FATHER, IS THAT HE’S OUR DADDY GOD.  BUT CAN WE REALLY CALL GOD, DADDY GOD?

Now, that might sound awkward to some, and others might believe it lacks reverence.  But we believe that there is no greater way we can honor God, than by calling Him, Daddy God.

Daddy signifies closeness, relationship, and if that wasn’t what He wanted for us, then why did Jesus have to do all He did for us to restore our relationship with God?

Think about that for a moment.

Now, before anyone gets the wrong idea about us, we should state upfront that we believe in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

OUR LORD JESUS ADDRESSED GOD THE FATHER AS “ABBA FATHER” IN MARK 14:36 – “AND HE SAID, “ABBA, FATHER, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE FOR YOU. TAKE THIS CUP AWAY FROM ME; NEVERTHELESS, NOT WHAT I WILL, BUT WHAT YOU WILL.”

Abba, literally means “daddy”.  If you were to walk around Jerusalem today, you would hear children calling their fathers “abba”.

But that’s Jesus right?  Of course He would call God, Daddy God.

It is worth noting that the apostle Paul, who wrote 2 thirds of the New Testament also called God “Abba Father”, and in fact encourages us to do so, as we have been given a “Spirit of adoption”:

  • Romans 8:15 “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
  • Galatians 4:6 “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

“ABBA” IS AN ARAMAIC WORD FOR FATHER, USED BY JESUS AND PAUL TO ADDRESS GOD IN A RELATION OF PERSONAL INTIMACY.

Despite what some critics might say about “abba” being irreverent when addressing God, many early churches, and even some modern churches use “abba” as a title of reverence for bishops and patriarchs in the Coptic, Ethiopian Christian, and Syriac churches.

We all know that Jesus as God the Son, will know God the Father intimately. Paul on the other hand, had a divine transformational encounter with God and stated in Galatians 1:15-16, “But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles…”

REMEMBER, PAUL DIDN’T EVEN “WALK WITH JESUS”, AS HE WASN’T SAVED UNTIL AFTER JESUS’ ASCENSION BACK TO HEAVEN.  AND YET, BY GRACE, PAUL CAME TO KNOW GOD AS ABBA FATHER, OR DADDY!

Paul generously shared with others the intimate term, used to address fathers during his time then, with which he uses to call God the Father – he further encouraged the people to cry out to “Abba, Father”!

Paul can address God the Father intimately like our Lord Jesus does, and encourages us to do so!

ALL OF US WHO BELIEVE THAT JESUS IS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR SHOULD HAVE THE COURAGE AND CONFIDENCE THAT, BECAUSE OF JESUS’ FINISHED WORK AT THE CROSS, WE ARE NOW THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN CHRIST AND THE CHILDREN OF GOD, AND THAT WE CAN ALSO BOLDLY GO BEFORE OR EVEN RUN TO GOD THE FATHER, CALLING HIM “DADDY GOD!”

But do we need to have experienced Paul’s divine transformational experience before we can call God the Father “Daddy God”, or do we need to have done great works like him? The answer to this is that it is by our Lord Jesus’ finished work that we are now the sons and daughters of God, it is not by our deeds – once we have accepted Jesus, we simply are.

To explain this in a more understandable way, I don’t have to do anything to be able to call my human father “Daddy”; I am simply his son, he my father and I address him as such.

WE JUST NEED TO KNOW WHO HE IS TO US – KNOWING HE IS OUR LOVING FATHER, ENABLES US TO CALL HIM DADDY GOD!

To the ones who may ask, shouldn’t our heavenly Father be respected and honored that He should not be called “Daddy” – the answer is yes, respected and honored with all my heart, with all my soul, and with all my mind – which is why I want to always be closer to my heavenly Father. Calling Him “Daddy God” doesn’t negate the awe, respect and honor I have for my heavenly Father. In fact, all can agree that no word accords more, than acknowledging that He is God – my Daddy God!

It is indeed by the glorious work of Jesus that all of us may be like what Isaiah 64:8 states “But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You our potter…” as well as being heartened by Paul in the New Testament to address our Daddy God intimately.

  • God the Father loves us. True love takes action. Because of our sins, God poured out His love for us by sending Jesus His Son to die on the cross for us. Jesus rose victoriously from the grave on the third day. Because of Jesus’ finished work on the cross, we are now the son or daughter of God the Father.
  • Imagine how much God, as our Father loves us!  Enough to send Jesus to die for us!
  • John 3:16 states “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
  • 1 John 4:10 (NIV) states “This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”

  • We get to call God the Father “Daddy God” simply by receiving Jesus as our Lord and Saviour.  You do not need to earn it – God has done it all for us, by sending Jesus to take the punishment for our sins that we deserve!
  • Ephesians 2:4-5 states “But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.”

  • We can never be separated from the love of God.
  • Romans 8:38-39 (NIV) states “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

  • Daddy God cares for us and knows what we need, we only need to ask Him.
  • Matthew 6:31-32 (NIV) states “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”
  • Matthew 7:11 (NIV) states “If you, then, through you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him!”

  • And what if we’re so broken we don’t know how to come to Him.  Just know that He already knows it all, we just need to come to Him.  Come in our brokenness, because we will never know how much He loves us, until we see Him love us in our broken states.
  • God formed us in our mother’s womb. We are wonderfully made by Him and He knows each one of us.
  • Psalm 139:13-14 states “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.”
  • Jeremiah 1:5 states “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
  • Psalm 139:1-2 states “O Lord, You have searched and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off.”

If you’re anything like me, that’s alot to remember!

Don’t let that turn you off though.  Remember that each of those points can be turned into a prayer for your loved one, whom you’re reaching out to.

Let’s just take the first 2 points as examples:

  • God the Father loves us. True love takes action. Because of our sins, God poured out His love for us by sending Jesus His Son to die on the cross for us. Jesus rose victoriously from the grave on the third day. Because of Jesus’ finished work on the cross, we are now the son or daughter of God the Father.

“Thank you Daddy God that you love [your loved one’s name] so much that you sent Jesus to die on the cross for him/her.  When Jesus rose victoriously from the grave, He did it for all sinners, including [your loved one’s name].  We know that you love him/her, so much, and we pray that you soften his/her heart, make it receptive to your Word, and guide me to plant that seed of your love in his/her heart, that will lead him/her to your saving grace.  We make this prayer in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

“Thank you Daddy God that you love [your loved one’s name] so much that you sent Jesus, your only begotten Son, whom you love dearly, so that he/she will not perish but have everlasting life, and come to know you as his/her Daddy God too.  We pray that [your loved one’s name] will not judge him/herself as unworthy of coming to you, but give him/her a revelation that he/she is loved dearly by you.  It is not how good or bad he/she has been, but how good You are.  That as long as he/she receives Jesus as his/her Lord and Savior, he/she is loved unconditionally by you as his/her Daddy God.  Help me to plant a seed of this love in his/her heart.  We make this prayer in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

You get the picture.  Of course, you’ll get the entire list in our prayer booklets.  But it’s simple enough to be guided by these everyday.  And as you pray each of these in turn for your loved one, you’ll start to internalize all of these points, and soon, it’ll be effortless!
